Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: China's New Energy Vehicle Industry achieves "Three Breakthroughs"

China News Service, Beijing, October 22 (Reporter Yuying Liu) Huang Libin, spokesman of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and director of the Operation Monitoring coordination Bureau, said Thursday that China's new energy vehicle industry has achieved "one leading and three breakthroughs".

In September, China's production and sales of new energy vehicles surged, reaching 136,000 and 138,000 units respectively, up 48 percent and 67.7 percent year-on-year.

China's investment in the whole industry chain of new energy vehicles has exceeded 2 trillion yuan (RMB, the same below). At a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council on the same day, Huang libin said that China's new energy vehicle industry has evolved from a nurturing stage to a development stage and become an important force leading the transformation of the global auto industry.

According to Huang libin, the first of the "three breakthroughs" is the market breakthrough. China's new energy vehicle trading volume has ranked first in the world for five consecutive years, with the cumulative promotion volume of more than 4.8 million vehicles, accounting for more than half of the world, accounting for about 1.7% of the total vehicle ownership in China.

Second, technological breakthroughs have been made in key fields such as battery, motor and electronic control, with active innovation and fruitful achievements. Power battery technology ranks among the top in the world. The density of the battery has reached 270 watt-hour/kg, which is 2.2 times higher than that in 2012. The battery price is 1.0 yuan/watt-hour, which is 80% lower than that in 2012.

Third, product breakthroughs have been made. The continuous driving mileage of mass-produced models has reached more than 500 kilometers, increasing consumer recognition. Yutong Bus, SAIC Mg and other products have been exported in bulk, and BYD, Geely and other companies have entered the top 10 of global new-energy passenger vehicle sales in 2019.

Huang libin said that China's new energy automobile industry also has a lack of core technology innovation ability, infrastructure construction is still lagging behind, the industrial ecology is not sound and other prominent problems.

The Development Plan of New Energy Automobile Industry (2021-2035) was deliberated and adopted by the Executive meeting of the State Council on October 9. "This will provide important guidance for the development of the new energy vehicle industry for a period of time to come," Huang said.
